My Internship
My experience through the IUPUI InShape personal training program was one that I don't think that I'll ever forget. In the beginning of the program, I was super nervous and felt like I might not be as ready as I thought I was. But with a little time and some reassurance through my professor and the teaching assistant, I was sure that I was ready for this task. Then after meeting my client and getting to know her and her goals I really was able to find my role and apply all of my knowledge to my client and her goals. Working with my client from the beginning of the experience all the way to the end of the program really taught some very valuable lessons. One specific example for me that really sticks out was when I was working on with my client on her balance. She told me that when she had gone into her therapy session the week prior. When she was there, she mentioned all of the exercises that we had been doing to improve her balance to her therapist. She told me that her therapist was quite surprised and impressed with my abilities to create a workout out plan that had the correct exercises that would help her improve her balance. Getting that kind of recognition from an actual professional really stuck with me and made me a little proud of myself. Another specific example that sticks out to me was one of my last few days with my client. We went through each and every test we had done from the beginning to see if we progressed and low and behold we had made great improvements in every category we tested in. Seeing the results of the workout program that I put together actually help someone improve themselves and help them reach certain goals meant a lot to me. As well as seeing my clients face when I told her about all of the improvements that she had made. It was something that really built my confidence and made me excited in my future as a personal trainer.

I chose trusting because I started to trust myself more with my knowledge when training my client. I chose breathing because I feel like I can breathe now that this internship is over. I chose happy because I'm happy that I got to take this internship and got to learn all that I can. Finally, I chose relaxed because I feel more relaxed now that I have taken this internship and that it has gotten me one step closer to starting my career.
Additional Experiences
Camp Brosius Leadership Development Camp
This was a college camp experience where exercise science, fitness management and personal training, physical education teacher education, and sports management majors exploring personality types along with leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. This experience allowed me to learn how to interact with other people of all different personality types and how to use those differences to help attain a common goal. I believe this camp also really assisted me in my communication skills.
P410 Service Learning - Motor Activity Clinic
A clinic that provides quality physical activity programming for Indianapolis-area children with disabilities. Students participate as physical education instructors' underneath guidance to aim hands-on experience in physical education and demonstration. This clinic experience helped me develop educational skills and patience for younger populations. It allowed me to work from the ground up on skills which helped me develop detail-oriented skills when it came to exercise prescription and training.
P420 Service Learning - Health Coaching
This class for me was really interesting because I had to go out and make a program for a client for this class. The client I chose to work with turned out to be quite a bit of challenge because she was pregnant. I took on this challenge because I thought it would be good for me to put myself through. Although it was a challenge, I'm glad I did it because I felt that it was a good experience for me. It helped me shape myself into the professional I am today because it showed me to step out of my comfort zone.
